Hero Arm user for 4 years

In November 2020 I started my Hero Arm Journey and in March 2021, I with the help of family, friends, local businesses, and Open Bionics managed to buy a HERO Arm. The appointments at Open Bionics were hassle free and everyone I met there were so welcoming and supportive. It took a total of 3-4 appointments to finalise the details I needed (casting, fitting, training etc) to finally get my Hero Arm.
Fast forward to 2024. The HERO Arm has changed my life in so many ways. I use it every day at work as a Warehouseman at Screwfix. I can push cages, trollies and drive any Manual Handling Equipment vehicles (e.g. FLT) around the warehouse, as well as using other heavy machinery and equipment. The warrantee I had on my arm ensured that from 2021-2023 all repairs and updates were conducted quickly by Open Bionics. I was sent a “loan hand” on several occasions, my hand collected repaired and returned – usually within a week. This included repairs of the fingers and palm grips, and updates of the hand’s hardware.
The warrantee of my Hero Arm ran out in October 2023 and as it is such a cool piece of kit, the repairs can be costly which was not financially viable for me. After discussions with Chris from the Customer Service Team at Open Bionics, I was advised to approach the NHS as the Hero Arm is now available on the NHS for Hero Arm Users who have been using the equipment for more than 2 years – as well as other people in the UK with a limb difference – however for those starting their Hero Arm journey as a new user, the process is significantly longer. Please do not see this as a deterrent though. You need to persevere with the process to get your HERO Arm as it is utterly amazing.
The NHS process has been slightly longer than the first. The NHS need to ensure that money is being spent appropriately. My journey also started a little differently, as I had to go to see my GP to get a referral to the Orthopaedics Department at the NHS.
I again have had a lovely journey with Open Bionics who have worked closely together with the NHS to support myself to get a new Hero Arm. Many thanks to Helder from Open Bionics and Phil from the NHS, who have made this process easy to understand and have been so supportive. I have had my cast, fitting and training – as the HERO Arm I will be using is an updated version and there are some new things it can do! I am now awaiting delivery of my new HERO Arm.
Once the order for the Hero Arm was submitted by the NHS to Open Bionics, my arm will take less than 15 weeks to complete and delivered. All repairs and updates will now be done through the NHS, which means I am secure in the knowledge that if I have any problems or any parts need replacing, they will be done in a fast and efficient manner at no cost to me, meaning I don’t have to worry about my finances anymore.
I cannot thank or recommend Open Bionics or the Hero Arm enough. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you. The Hero Arm is truly lifechanging.

The Hero Arm has been a huge asset to me because of what it’s helped me achieve physically and mentally.

For me the arm has been incredibly useful for my job as a technician because I do a lot of work that generally requires two hands and it has been more than capable keeping up with the workload.

Although its functions are of course useful, I find that being able to change arm covers really helps express myself while still looking stylish at the same time.

Since testing the arm from the start the team have always listened to us users and what we want to see featured or changed to make sure our experience with the arm is as beneficial as possible.

When I slipped the Hero Gauntlet on and moved my joint and then my fingers went – I thought in amazement “Oh yes, look there!” And then we went on and on, trying out and adjusting everything, then they got a ball, then a screwdriver.. I could finally control the hardness of the grip.

My name is Kristin, I became a Quad Amputee after the second round of chemotherapy for stage 4 Burkitt Lymphoma went bad when i went septic, and after life saving efforts all 4 limbs had to be amputated. But i was lucky to be alive and i knew that there was prosthetics that could help me after the long road of healing that had to take place, along with the chemotherapy i had to finish. I was so happy to be alive and when it came time finding Open Bioncs was such a blessing! The Hero Arm has changed my life, along with helping me with eating myself, holding a cup to drink myself, and picking up things, the Hero Arm has helped make walking on my prosthetic legs so much easier because I can grip my cane with my Hero Arm!! It is wild how confident my Hero arm makes me feel while I walk, go up & down stairs, and sit or stand. I didn’t think I would be this far in my recovery but with the help of the people who love me, my physical therapist, OT, my doctors, and prosthetists, the work I’ve done with the Hero Arm, my two leg prosthetics, and hopefully my above elbow amputation will soon join this work load lol this is what has gotten me where i am!! It’s fun to see kids faces light up when they see my Hero Arm and everything it can do, I love showing it off to them, and honestly as many adults are intrigued with my Hero Arm as the Kids are lol. Thank you Open Bionics for giving me back so much more with my Hero Arm that I unfortunately lost, I am so grateful!!

Words are inadequate to express my sincere gratitude to the Open Bionics Team! This was a one of a kind experience! It took 3 visits to go through the process from zero to Hero Arm! My favourite thing is that the Hero Arm allows me to do things that I never could before, without it.
I would say to anyone thinking about getting a Hero Arm, just go for it. My bionic journey marked the start of a completely new chapter in my life, one that I thought would never be possible. Living with a limb difference has always been a major insecurity for me so never did I think that after twenty three years of living with a limb difference I would be able to experience what its like to have both arms. Over the last two years the Hero Arm has allowed me to do things that I thought would never be physically possible, it has also helped me build my confidence enough to finally be able to view my limb difference as something positive rather than an insecurity. Now when people stop to ask about my limb difference it’s mostly because they want to learn more about my Hero Arm. It’s even been a point of conversation when I met Russel Howard at one of his stand up shows last year! When I first received my Hero Arm I made a point by saying that I would need to learn to live life all over again but with both arms this time and even after two years I am still learning. My bionic journey has been one the most incredible experiences of my life, one for which I will forever be grateful!

The hero arm has made such an impact on my life, not only physically but also so much mentally! I wear two hero arms which help me so much when it comes to multi-tasking. They’re lightweight and functional more so than any prosthetic I have worn in the past. After following Open Bionics for around 5 years and suffering increasing pain while using my old prosthetic arm I finally decided to take the plunge and contact them to see if I would be a suitable candidate for the Hero Arm.
That was the best decision I’ve ever made!
The whole journey from the initial phone call and crowdfunding help, through to the fitting appointments and opportunities to be involved with the hero arm community has been wonderful. At the time of writing it’s 9 months since I collected my hero arm and, while it instantly became a part of me (and the most comfortable prosthetic limb I’ve worn in over 40 years), I now feel that I’m a part of the Open Bionics family. These talented and compassionate people really listen to their clients and move mountains to ensure your hero arm is as in-tune with you and your personality as it can possibly be.
Oh, and that pain I used to have? It’s gone.

An amazing experience from start to finish. The whole process was very smooth and simple. Elise did a great job with our son. Did a lot of work with insurance getting everything taken care of and ready for us. The final product was also above and beyond what we expected. Open Bionics literally changed my life through their innovative technology, their passion and energy for high quality prosthetics along with their client focused approach. My experience of Open bionics has been wonderful. I believe I once described my experience of Open Bionics as a clinic patient relationship, rather than that of a business and client.
All the staff from the Research & Development to Marketing through to reception staff all care passionately about creating a professional and warm atmosphere that is welcoming, reassuring and affirming. Every step of the prosthetic process was explained and demonstrated by a personal technician, who was able to answer questions.
Open Bionics, were able to put me in touch with their dedicated team committed to helping their clients/patients fundraise for their innovative prosthetics like the Hero Arm. Being hesitant with regards to fundraising, this team was able to advise, guide and demonstrate all that I would need to do in order to fundraise. I felt this was a real personal touch which fostered depth to the client/patient relationship. I found the entire process from inquiry to fitting easy, informative and friendly. This was further cemented with outstanding aftersales care.
I cannot recommend Open Bionics enough to anyone that is looking for prosthetic arms, whether this be an upgrade or first prosthetic. The technology is incredible with regards to functionality, weight, design and versatility of the multiple cover designs.
Having not had a prosthetic for over 16 years, I was highly sceptical that I would even be able to operate in myoelectric prosthetic, particularly when the NHS told me that there wasn’t enough signal in the area of my limb difference. The Technician, took this as a challenge and was totally confident that there would be away for me to operate the Hero Arm. In less than two hours the technician had achieved his goal and I had for the first time in 16 years operated a hand via my limb difference.
Open Bionics have given me a level of independence back that I had once lost. This has had a positive impact on my family and my calling as a Priest. My Hero Arm as quickly become part of my identity and feels natural with regards to operating the hand. I don’t think this would have been impossible without the experience and professionalism of Open Bionics.

Open Bionics have changed my Daughters life for good. The whole process of creating the perfect bionic arm was pleasant and enjoyable for the whole family. Open bionics helped us every step of the way, including getting the funds together to buy the hero arm. I would give them 10 stars if the option was there.
Since my daughter has started using the arm she has started learning a lot of new things she can do but also it has gave her so much confidence in every day life.
If you or anyone is looking into Bionic arms I would 100% get one from Open Bionics.
The arm itself has many different movement options and is easily done. The control of the movement is very impressive. It’s strong, slick and not to heavy. Covers can be replaced with ease and the arm just looks great.
Thank you again Open Bionics for making my Daughter one step ahead of everyone else rather than one step back.

I found out about Open Bionics while researching prosthetic devices for my personal use. After having not worn a prosthetic device for 35 years I felt like this was a great product to begin my journey in the bionic world. From my very first interaction until my most recent they have been incredibly professional. They respond to communications in a timely manner and are open to communicating via social media channels as well. This made it incredibly easy to have a conversation with them when needed. I am based in the US and worked with the Hanger Clinic to obtain my hero arm. I love the fact that it is 3-D printed and has customizable capabilities for my own personal style. It’s an incredibly affordable Prosthetic device. Once my arm was delivered to me the service did not stop. They continue to seek information and input around the usability functions and features of the arm. I have had a number of conversations with their team To discuss functionality and features I’d love to see in the future. It’s not too often you find a company that’s willing to have a meeting and listen to your feedback on their products and remain open minded. Would I work with them again? 100% yes. Would I use their equipment in the future? I am looking forward to the advancements that they will make with future designs of the hero arm.

An incredible team of innovative professionals who are clearly striving to provide life changing bionic prosthetics where ever possible. I can not thank them enough for what they have done, and what they’re pushing to achieve.
My daughter, Phoebe, was born with an upper limb difference as well as a hugely bubbly character, and a fear of mine was that her limb difference would, due to other’s misunderstanding, compromise her personality as she grew older. Thanks to Open Bionics and their awe-inspiring Heroarm, this fear has been completely extinguished. Phoebe’s bionic prosthetic has totally thrown what may have been seen as a negative curiosity to the completely opposite end of the spectrum. Other children now, instead of asking “why does that girl have only one arm?”, are blown away with the amazing, outstanding piece of equipment which is looked upon with envious eyes. This has, in fact, increased Phoebe’s bubbly, zany character ten fold, and has provided her with a massive confidence boost within herself. So not only has Open Bionics team supported Phoebe physically, they have helped her mentally with a life time of courage which cannot be compared.
The functionality of the Heroarm is unbelievably fantastic. Equipped with rubber finger tips alongside a steady but firm grip, Phoebe has been undergoing a plethora of tasks purely on her own which would have, before receiving her Heroarm, required assistance (examples can be seen on her Instagram and TikTok: phoebe.bionic) which has, again, increased her confidence with every day life as we’re all entitled to.

Five of our Team LimbBo Children now have Hero Arms. As well as helping them in practical ways, the boost this has given to their self esteem is immeasurable. I absolutely love my new state-of-the-art Hero Arm! It’s 3D printed to fit me perfectly! It incorporates several advanced features, from three different user modes to carbon fiber cables. Thinking of how in 2009 I was faced with either no prosthetic or a hook and how I tried going the hook route only to give up when kids immediately were scared to be around me. Hero Arm user for 9 months

I absolutely love my new state-of-the-art Hero Arm! It’s 3D printed to fit me perfectly! It incorporates several advanced features, from three different user modes to carbon fiber cables. My Hero Arm has allowed me to return to many of my previous activities I could no longer do since my amputation.

Tate uses the Hero Arm a lot, estimated at 2+ hours per day. Really helping with being able to open things, it’s an absolute gamechanger and life changer. Helping Tate to become more independent and confident.

Absolutely would like another one and would like to have one for the rest of their life.
