Here at Open Bionics we know that no two patients, or stories are the same. It is our goal to understand the emotional and physical needs of each and every one of our patients to customize their experience and determine how our devices can help them reach their goals. This is why we have opened a prosthetic clinic in Detroit Michigan, so patients have a place to consult, learn and try the latest of bionic technologies we have to offer.
The first step in your journey is to register on our website. Once registered, you will be contacted by a member of our qualification team to ensure we have a device that is right for you. After a quick call we can either set up a video call with our in-house prosthetist so they can answer questions, and if funding support is required you will be directed to our funding support team.
If you choose the Open Bionics clinic in Detroit Michigan, you will be guaranteed to get any of our devices for the lowest possible price. During the appointment, we will cover all your prosthetic needs and go through social, medical, and prosthetic history as well as get a better understanding of your goals and how you’d like any of our devices to help you reach your goals. Also, as part of the appointment our in-house prosthetist will assess your limb presentation, determine muscle sites for the MyoPods. These are all non-invasive practises that will allow you to get an idea of how bionic arm devices would work on your arm.
During your appointment, we will place a trial kit which will allow you to practice muscle contractions needed to open and close the hand. Once we find the best muscle sites to place the MyoPods and you have had plenty of time to practice, we will get measurements of your limb as well as either a scan or a cast so that we can begin to make a liner that fits you perfectly.
Next time you visit us in the clinic, you will be in for a “check socket” appointment. We use this time to check that the liner fit is perfect and you can undertake a number of activities while wearing it. From this appointment we note any changes or pressure points that need to be adjusted in the final liner that will fit inside your bionic arm. We will also make sure there is adequate suspension so the final prosthetic arm stays on your arm comfortably, while giving you a good range of motions. Once we have the optimal liner, we will once again get you set up with the trial kit so you can further practice the muscle contractions to function the bionic arm and we can test the final length to make sure it looks good and you are happy with it.
The final appointment will be the day you get to take home your device. We will assess the overall fit of the final bionic arm and make any minor adjustments as needed. We will then go through a training session to make sure you understand how to operate your device and ensure it is functioning properly.
After the final delivery we offer remote follow up appointments. These can be used as additional training sessions or to answer any questions that may come up. If further adjustments are needed after the final fitting we will also offer in person adjustment and follow up appointments if you would prefer. We suggest having the first remote video follow up about 2 weeks after you take your device home.
Allysa was born and raised in Michigan and completed her Bachelor’s degree at Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula. She then earned her Master’s in Prosthetics and Orthotics at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. She returned to Michigan for her residency in the Detroit Metro area and has since worked in the Thumb region, treating both adult and pediatric patients across a range of settings.
Allysa has a passion for the Olympics and Paralympics and for empowering people to stay active and play sports. Her background in engineering and fabrication gives her a deeper mechanical understanding of the devices she works with, helping her build stronger connections with her patients.
