New: Build Your Own Custom Grips on Hero PRO and Hero RGD | Open Bionics
New from Open Bionics

You can now create your own grips on Hero PRO and Hero RGD.

Everyone uses their hand differently. With Custom Grips, you can go beyond preset grips and build one around what you actually want your hand to do. Start from scratch or fine-tune a grip you already use, control the position and timing of every finger using keyframes, adjust grip force, preview it in 3D, test it on your hand, and share it with other Hero PRO and Hero RGD users.

Tilly put it to the test with a whiteboard pen.

Tilly builds a Custom Grip to hold a whiteboard pen.

When a preset grip isn’t quite right

Tilly wanted to pick a pen up off her whiteboard. She tried a hook grip first, then a pinch. Neither was right. Key grip came closer, but at that particular angle it still felt a little awkward.

So she built her own.

“I’m going to build a custom grip for it.”

Control every finger with keyframes

Custom Grips use keyframes. For each step of the grip, you choose where each finger moves and when it gets there. That gives you control over the whole movement, not just the final position.

“I can control where each finger moves and when it gets there, so I can really fine tune how the whole grip works.”

You can also adjust grip force, giving you more control over how firmly the hand holds an object. So you’re not only shaping the position and movement of the fingers, but how the finished grip performs for the task. For the pen, Tilly designed a grip that holds it between two fingers.

Start with a grip you already use

You don’t have to start from scratch. You can take one of your preloaded grips and fine-tune it. If you want a tighter pinch, for example, you can adjust the finger positions and grip force until it works the way you want.

Preview it in 3D, then test it on your hand

Preview your Custom Grip in 3D in the app, or run it straight on your Hero PRO or Hero RGD. Then keep adjusting until it works the way you want.

When Tilly tested hers on the whiteboard, the pen went between her fingers just as she’d planned.

“Do a little bit of trial and error until you have the perfect grip for you.”

Share your grips by QR code

Built a grip you’re proud of? Share it with another Hero PRO or Hero RGD user using a QR code.

This level of customization is crazy.

For clinicians: Build the grip your patient actually needs

Your patient has a specific task, tool or activity they want to use their prosthesis for, but a preset grip isn’t quite right. With Custom Grips, you can work with your patient to create or refine a grip around that specific goal.

Why It Matters

Start with an existing grip or build one from scratch. Adjust the position and timing of individual fingers using keyframes, fine-tune grip force, preview the movement in 3D, then test it directly on Hero PRO or Hero RGD and keep refining it together. It gives you another way to tailor the hand around the patient and the task they want to accomplish.
