Now Fitting Bionic Arms in Minneapolis: Meet Andrew Wollenburg, Certified Prosthetist

13th November 2025

When you visit the Open Bionics clinic in Brooklyn Center, just north of Minneapolis, Minnesota, you meet Andrew Wollenburg, a clinician who believes the best prosthetic care starts with a conversation.

I want people to feel completely comfortable the moment they step into the clinic,” Andrew said. “The most important part of my job is listening and understanding what each person needs before we talk about technology. That means taking the time to make sure my patients know what to expect from start to finish.”

Andrew first studied engineering before realizing he wanted a career centered on helping people. “I didn’t like the idea of sitting behind a desk all day,” he said. “I grew up gardening and working on projects with my hands, like home improvement and car restoration. I did a job shadow and fell in love with prosthetics.”

Originally from rural Iowa, Andrew grew up hearing stories of farm injuries and saw how the right care could change someone’s life. He completed his orthotics residency in Milwaukee and later worked at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, Florida, where he gained deep respect for the veteran community. “The VA was a great experience,” he said. “Veterans have a unique way of facing challenges head-on. They taught me a lot about perseverance and empathy.”

Those lessons shape how Andrew approaches every patient today. “I try to really get to know each person and their goals,” he said. “I’m determined to help them reach those goals.”

The Minneapolis clinic serves a diverse limb-different community, including refugees for whom limb difference may carry cultural stigma. “It’s about meeting people where they are,” Andrew said. “We want every patient to feel seen, understood, and confident.”

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys golf, hiking, and rock climbing. He recently got married and lives with his two tuxedo cats, Laurel and Agnes.
