I still remember walking into my first bionic arm demo. The mix of nerves, anticipation, and hope were strong. What unfolded that day changed how I saw my own limb difference and can change how you see yours too. If you have ever wondered what happens at a bionic arm demo, this is what it can feel like.
The first thing you notice when you step into an Open Bionics clinic is how welcoming it feels. With clinics across the states, including Denver, Los Angeles, Texas, Minnesota, Chicago, Virginia Beach, Orlando, Pittsburgh, and New York, you never have to travel far to meet a team that truly understands upper limb difference.
You begin by chatting with a member of our team, usually a qualified prosthetist who listens to your story, your limb history, and the tasks you want to do in daily life. They explain how myoelectric controls work and introduce you to options like the Hero PRO and Hero RGD.
Then comes the part everyone waits for. The prosthetist places wireless EMG sensors called MyoPods on your residual limb. Seconds later, you see the fingers of the demo device move because of the way you move your arm to send muscle signals through the sensors.
I will never forget my first clench. But I think often about other stories I have heard too. One young girl at a demo in Orlando burst into tears because she had never seen a hand move of her own body before. Another man in Chicago sat completely silent for almost a full minute after his first grip. When the hand finally opened, he whispered that he had not seen anything move on that side of his body since his accident years ago. Moments like these remind me how powerful and impactful a demo can be, and why you should be requesting it as part of your decision making process when looking for a bionic arm.
Once the sensors are dialed in, you can try small daily tasks like picking up a bottle, holding your phone, or moving lightweight objects. The demo uses a temporary trial kit that helps identify your strongest muscle sites. This step ensures the final custom device responds smoothly yet precisely to you. For many people, this is when they start imagining what their daily life could look like. You see yourself carrying groceries, making coffee, scrolling your phone, or typing without adjusting everything awkwardly. The demo gives you a safe and intuitive space to picture a more confident version of yourself.

If it feels right, the clinician scans or casts your residual limb to create your custom liner. During follow-ups, the prosthetist adjusts the fit as needed and checks your comfort. They look for pressure points or anything that might affect long-term wear. This was emotional for me too. After years of wearing uncomfortable sockets, feeling a liner molded specifically to my arm felt like someone finally built something for me instead of around me. It was soft and breathable. Something I could envision wearing all day with no pain or irritation.

If you want to move forward, the clinic schedules measurements, your scan or cast, and your final fitting. When your custom Hero PRO or Hero RGD is ready, you return to unbox it, learn your controls, and fine-tune your grip modes. The Sidekick App helps you customize settings and track usage. Remote and in-person follow-ups make adjustments easy and personable. We are always here to support you post-delivery!
A bionic arm demo is more than a tech trial. It is often an emotional moment of possibility. For me, it was the first time I realized I could have an arm that worked with me rather than against me. For others, it has brought tears, joy, and a sense of reclaiming independence. If you are curious, the demo is free, supportive, and pressure-free. It is your chance to feel that first spark when your muscle moves a bionic hand. And that moment can change everything.
