1st September 2025
We’re excited to be heading to the AOPA 2025 National Assembly in Orlando, Florida (September 3–6). You’ll find us at Booth 823, where we’ll be showcasing our two most advanced prosthetic devices — the Hero PRO and the Hero RGD. Visitors will also have the chance to meet 17-year-old “Bionic Kid” Davic, Hero RGD user Jason, and our Orlando Clinic Lead, Emily Shannon, who will all be sharing their experiences and running demos throughout the event.
🦾 We’ve already fitted over 1,000 people with bionic arms, so come see for yourself how the technology works — and hear directly from customers what it’s like to use one day-to-day.
Davic, from Fort White, Florida, was injured in an ATV accident that led to the amputation of his arm. Just three days after surgery, he returned to school, and within a month he was playing sports again. Thanks to the generosity of his small town, which fundraised tirelessly for six months, Davic was fitted with the Hero PRO bionic arm recently.
“Davic’s determination shows the true potential of this technology,” said Emily Shannon, Orlando Clinic Lead at Open Bionics who worked with Davic. “He is proof that the right prosthetic can do so much more than restore function. It can restore identity, purpose, and joy. We are proud to stand beside him at AOPA and share his story.”
According to his mom, the difference has been life changing:
“So many things are different for him now. This is the first year he can carry his own backpack to school. He can hold a bottle and take the lid off. He uses it for running errands, going out to dinner, and shopping. The only time he doesn’t wear it is when he’s sleeping. The Hero PRO has been absolutely life changing. It’s independence, confidence, and a little bit of wow factor all in one.”
Joining us at AOPA is Jason, who will be showing off the rugged durability of our newest bionic arm, the Hero RGD. Designed for tough environments, the Hero RGD offers strength, water resistance, and fast grip functionality, making it ideal for everything from outdoor work to daily tasks.
Jason has shared that compared to previous prosthetics he’s tried, the Hero RGD is lighter, more durable, and gives him the freedom to do things like ride his BMX bike, garden, mow the yard, and even test the hand underwater while splashing around in his pool. With its internal battery, covered components, and responsive design, the Hero RGD eliminates many of the frustrations of myoelectric devices — and opens up possibilities for more active, everyday use.
Alongside user demos, our Upper Limb Prosthetist from the Orlando Clinic, Emily Shannon, will be offering live clinical demonstrations.
Emily studied biomedical engineering in college and was active in the 3D printing club e-Nable, where she led project teams designing recreational devices for upper limb amputees. Her passion for patient care grew as she went on to complete her MSPO at the University of Pittsburgh and her combined orthotic & prosthetic residency in Houston, Texas, training with specialists in cranial, scoliosis, advanced carbon bracing, and prosthetics.
With her unique blend of engineering knowledge and clinical expertise, Emily is excited to connect with attendees, answer clinical questions, and demonstrate the Hero PRO and Hero RGD in action.
“I love conferences like AOPA because they bring together clinicians, patients, and innovators who are passionate about advancing prosthetic care,” said Emily Shannon, Orlando Clinic Lead at Open Bionics. “I’m especially excited to attend the “So Every BODY Can Move” celebration this year. This is an organization that is dedicated to empowering people through movement and our Open Bionics ecosystem is a great example of combining function with physical mobility. I’m looking forward to showing attendees what’s possible with our newest technology.
