✅ Hero PRO and Hero RGD have been designed to meet the requirements of the NHS Multi-Grip Hand Policy.
Your NHS enablement centre will be able to offer you a trial of a multi-grip hand like Hero PRO or Hero RGD if you meet these criteria:
• You have used a single-grip myoelectric prosthesis (or a privately funded Hero ARM) for at least 12 months.
• You have used a single-grip myoelectric prosthesis (or a privately funded Hero ARM) for at least 12 months.
You demonstrate the ability to learn and safely use the multi-grip device and commit to training both in clinic and daily life (don’t worry, our Sidekick app will help every step of the way).
The multidisciplinary team (MDT) at your NHS centre will assess and decide if you are suitable for a trial based on limb level, health, and functional need.
You may be given the opportunity to trial multiple options to see which one works best for you. You should prepare for the appointment by thinking about what you might need from your multi-grip hand for your day to day needs. For example:
• you need to be able to wash your hands after going to the bathroom?
• you need to be able to do the washing up?
• you need to be able to wash your car?
• you need to use your arm outdoors when it might rain?
• you ever experienced any shoulder pain or discomfort from compensatory movements while using a prosthesis?
• your limb gets hot throughout the day? Do you need a ventilated socket for cooling?
If these needs resonate with you, you and your MDT team may find that the IP67 full-arm water resistance, integrated wrist flexion/extension, and ventilated liner and socket offered by Hero PRO and Hero RGD make them the only clinically appropriate options for you.
If you’re an NHS prosthetist or occupational therapist in the UK looking to trial or provide Open Bionics products to your patients, we will be happy to help you.
Open Bionics is not currently on NHS England Supply chain, but there are two easy options for every NHS trust in England to buy from Open Bionics.
1️⃣ There’s an exemption list covering companies that were offering multi-grip hands before the multi-grip policy came into place. Open Bionics is on that list.
2️⃣ Open Bionics has an NHS contract with Healthtrust Europe under Patient mobility Products and Services, which can be accessed via Healthtrust Europe.
We’re very happy to support with either pathway.
