Using our FlexPrint™ process, your liner is 3D printed from a soft, flexible elastomer, which allows it to conform to the shape of your arm. The fluted design also means that it can expand outwards, making it easier to take the arm on and off.

29-year-old Daniel Melville, who was born without his right hand and has been wearing a Hero Arm for over 3 years, is the very first recipient of the new Metal Gear Solid design. Kath’s life changed in the lead up to Christmas in 2019 when she caught a fever she couldn’t shake. That night Kath suffered 7-11 cardiac arrests and sepsis spread throughout her body. Her family were by her bed-side and told she wasn’t going to survive. 18-months on and Kath is just coming out of her recovery following a quadruple amputation to save her life. She has been able to go back to teaching with two Hero Arms.
10-year-old Zak was born without his left hand. Zak lives in Michigan in the US, with his parents and older sister Mia, and is a huge fan of science fiction movies such as Star Wars and the Avengers. At the end of April 2019, Zak was fitted with a Hero Arm at his local Hanger Clinic in Livonia, and he also received super cool Iron Man covers, just in time for the premiere of Avengers: Endgame.
31-year old Sadie was born without her left hand. From hooks with pulley systems to heavy bionics, as a child, Sadie’s prosthetics were so unaesthetic and cumbersome that she abandoned them completely. However, two decades later, she was so impressed with the Hero Arm that she successfully raised the funds to get her own. This is her journey.
43-year-old Darren ‘Daz’ Fuller is the first military veteran in the world to receive a Hero Arm. Daz, who lives in Colchester, U.K. with his wife and his 4-year-old daughter Sky, enlisted into the Parachute Regiment in 1994 and served for 20 years. In 2008, whilst serving in Helmand Province, he was injured in an incident with mortar ammunition and lost his lower right arm. Daz received funding for his Hero Arm through the NHS Veterans’ Prosthetics Panel, and hopes to be the “first of many”.
Back in November 2019, I’d never heard of Sepsis. I came home from the school I worked at one Friday feeling a little unwell and thinking it was a common flu, I brushed it off and spent the weekend resting. Then by Sunday afternoon, something prompted me to call NHS 111 and seek advice. I believe that the call handler saved my life by sending out an ambulance to my house and that’s all I really remember from that weekend.
In hospital, I later found out that my body had gone into severe septic shock and that night, I had suffered multiple organ failure. By January, I started to get some memories and I remember waking up and noticed that my feet and arms were black and I was told I would have to have quadruple amputations.
I was first fitted with prosthetic hooks, but I knew I couldn’t go back to teaching with heavy hooks and a wheelchair. My friends and family found out about Open Bionics and when I got to grips with the first Hero Arm, it became part of me. I relied on it so much, I had to get a second one. I am now back in the classroom on a part-time basis and children love my Hero Arms.
I am able to write on the board, carry books, and teach with my Hero Arms which is a dream come true.
I decided I wanted to go back to school and see the kids I taught because what happened was obviously a shock to the whole community. I just disappeared one Friday and at the time, my employers didn’t really know what to tell the children, particularly when there was a high chance I wouldn’t survive so it was a distressing time for everybody.

He mastered the new technology straight away and within hours he was riding a bike, reading books, holding binoculars and giving thumbs up to everyone. Zak’s mom was really pleased to see her son getting joy out of using a prosthetic. She said: “To be able to hear him say he can handle the bike better, makes me really excited that he can see the benefit of using tools like this to help him have different experiences.”
“Zak’s previous experience with prosthetics – the more traditional ones that were available to us – they were a little bit heavier and not as user-friendly to him, and so he wasn’t overly excited to use them at the time.” Zak’s mom continued: “The newer technology is lighter, he had more input into the colour and the design, so he felt more part of the process. And so as we heard about the Hero Arm, we thought this might be something really unique that he might be interested in, and absolutely, it was exactly what he was hoping for.”

When I was about 3 years old, I had a hook prosthetic with a pulley system that went around my back and over my right shoulder which allowed the hook to open and close. The hook could be changed for other “useful” attachments. For example, there was a piece of metal with a rubber tip that was used for typing. It was awful and I refused to wear it.
“Then came my bionic arm, it was heavy, the wire to the battery pack irritated me and it only had an open and close function which got stuck and was about as useful as a chocolate teapot!”
Sadie gave up on prosthetics until 20 years later, when a friend shared our Meet the Hero Arm video on Facebook. Impressed by the advanced technology, she set up a crowdfunding page… and was immediately inundated with donations from friends, family, and strangers around the world. Within a year, she had raised enough money to get her very own arm.
Collecting her brand new Hero Arm from Open Bionics in April 2019, Sadie was thrilled by how far prosthetics have come: “It’s dextrous, it’s not unsightly, and it’s completely customisable. It’s perfect. Growing up with a limb difference came with a lot of nicknames. It upset me quite a lot. The Hero Arm helps me celebrate my limb difference. By trying not to blend in it stands out, and invites people to ask questions rather than run away.”
The Hero Arm has made an enormous difference to Sadie’s life. As well as looking amazing, everyday two-handed tasks are now much easier: whether it’s making coffee, reading a book, or changing body jewellery.

Doing things together as a family that may not have been possible or a lot harder before has been great. I can also now remember the last time I ate with a knife and fork as it was yesterday.”

“After going past the worry of if you’re going to survive, and how the future is going to be, you just immerse yourself into rehabilitation. I think there was an element of hope on the way in, and then the expectations were exactly what I was hoping for It means a great deal to actually have a myoelectric arm. It’s the functionality that I’m hoping to get from it, as the more I can do with my right arm, the more it’s going to save my left. It will give me the confidence to try things with the prosthetic.
The functionality is absolutely amazing, I can make the smallest movements with it. I’ve tried all sorts of prosthetics over the years and the Bionic Arm is by far and away the best of the lot – it’s absolutely brilliant. I really believe it’s going to improve my life massively.”
