I am constantly surprised by how often people ask me the same thing: How do you get a prosthetic arm? That simple question opens the door to a much bigger conversation, and it is one I face every single day. The most common topic is insurance. And here is what you need to know if you want a bionic arm through your health insurance.
I always begin these conversations with honesty because the truth can be hard. The biggest barrier is never the technology. It’s often not the prosthetist. It is rarely the level of limb difference. It is insurance companies, especially in the United States.
Too many people assume coverage is automatic, like getting glasses or a dental cleaning. I wish that were true. Instead, I walk people through the maze of pre-authorizations, denials, appeals, and waiting rooms that have become a routine part of my life. They look at me shocked, and every time I think, “I wish I could be shocked too.”
I often share the story of sitting in a clinic room explaining to a doctor why I needed two arms to cut food, tie my shoes, and carry groceries. That moment always gets people. It should. It is uncomfortable to prove your need for something that is already so obvious.
Yet those are the hoops we jump through. The middle of the journey is where so many people get stuck. Miscommunication, misplaced forms, unanswered phone calls, and unclear policies become barriers that wear people down. I hear it all the time: “I tried once, got denied, and gave up.” My heart aches every time, because that is exactly what the system counts on.
I try to remind people that they are not alone, and that even when the process feels designed to break us, we still have options.
It matters to document everything. It matters to ask for letters, collect proof, and gather a team of supporters who understand the urgency. It also matters to speak up. Some of my biggest breakthroughs came from refusing to be quiet, from pushing past discomfort, and from leaning on an incredible network of advocates who stepped in when I felt defeated.
The team at Open Bionics pride themselves on helping patients with guidance and offering support at each stage of the insurance application process (yes even if there is a denial, they will be with you ready with an action plan).
I always end these conversations with hope because I genuinely believe change is possible. The solution is never one thing, but a combination of community pressure, personal persistence, and collective awareness.
People need to know this system is broken before they demand it be fixed. When employers, clinicians, friends, and organizations start advocating with us instead of for us, things shift.
I have lived through denials, appeals, confusion, and victories, and what I know now is simple: the more we share our stories, the more power we have to reshape the system for the next person who asks me that familiar question.
If you are navigating this journey yourself, remember that your voice matters. Your needs matter. And there is always a path forward, even when the system tries to convince you otherwise.
If you would like to discuss your personal circumstance and would like a qualified prosthetist to put a plan together of how to get a bionic arm, don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can either book a free consultation with your local prosthetist or register here and we will be in touch to chat.
