Open Bionics Hero Arm patient story

My natural hand was seen as a disability. But a bionic arm represents ability. This is an addition to me.

Common Questions While You Wait

What will the call be like?

It’s a friendly 15-minute call with a specialist — not a sales pitch. We listen, learn about your situation, answer questions, and figure out together whether an Open Bionics clinic is a good fit. You’re under no obligation to move forward.

How much does a bionic arm cost? Will my insurance cover it?

Many of our patients are fully funded through insurance — including private plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA. Your clinician personally handles navigation and appeals, with a high success rate on overturning denials. If insurance falls short, we walk you through payment plans, hardship waivers for out-of-pocket costs, and a curated list of grants and non-profits you can apply to for additional support.

Who qualifies for a Hero Arm?

We fit patients with below-elbow and above-elbow limb differences, partial hand and finger amputations, and post-stroke or neurological injury. Children as young as 8 can be fitted (with patients as young as 5 in certain cases). Your specialist will confirm fit during your free consultation.

How long does the whole process take?

From your first consultation to wearing your custom device typically takes a few months, depending on your insurance approval timeline. The fitting itself can be completed in as few as two visits after your evaluation.

What if I don’t live near a clinic?

Our clinics cover 12 U.S. states. If you’re not near one of our locations, we can connect you with a partner clinic or arrange a remote consultation to get you started. Your specialist will help you find the right path.
